Lilacs & Lemons

Had a bouquet of lilacs on the table
the first time you visited.

Had lemons in a kitchen bowl.
You made lemonade; served it
in flutes. We shared ordinary meals
on my good china; celebrated
our holidays on Sundays,
sometimes till Thursday.

Lilacs don't bloom long,
lemonade is bittersweet,
I loved your balance.
Lilacs and lemonade,
a wilted bouquet and
cloudy drink, pleasures
enjoyed for a season.

  2. pleasures enjoyed for a season....yes, some things do not last and we have only to appreciate them while we can...or lament their passing...i rather like their simplicity...lemonade and ordinary on the fine china...

  3. Beautiful Tonya...magic moments and memories are all transient. Enjoyed this poem very much.

  4. So much beauty has to be enjoyed when it is. It often is fleeting, but that doesn't take away from the loveliness of the experience. I like the ending: pleasures for a season. I think much of life is like that.

  6. So very true - those little rituals we have and the way we celebrate certain things like the seasons. This was perfect.

  13. There is a kindness in this poem that matches the balance of the lilacs and lemons. The seasoning is good and not regretted!

  14. A sniff of sadness here, LaTonya. The first hint was the cad letting your writer use her fine china for everyday meals. Lilacs are home grown most times too, he may have cut them from her bush.

Like I always say, I wouldn't spay my cat for any woman. Nor declaw her.

  17. This is quite simply magnificent. I see poets as those who either hide through their work or who tell you who they are through their work. You have shared yourself wonderfully here.

    1. Liz, the older I get the less I want to hide. That, and a favorite poet wrote that everyone is so afraid to get naked but getting naked is necessary. Thank you.

  22. LaTonya, loved the cloudy and wilted together. Good metaphor for some loves... they make lemonade out of lemons, but the result is not always lemoncello...! Well done. Amy
