Marked IX: Mothers and daughters, a legacy

Your father said a prayer to the Goddess and then made preparations for himself. During your initiation period, your father took a trip. He went to your mother. Marked VIII (link)

When I thought I could stand no more, she tells me my father went to my mother! I thought a blood vessel would rupture in my head. I try to keep my voice steady this time.

“He went to my mother? Where?”

“Does it matter where? The point is he went to her, and this time it was about you.”

“This time?”

“Are you a parrot or a jackass?”

I can't fire back. I'm spent. It has been a long day. And as far as I can see, this series of events has only been ominous. Matron sent me out here for what I thought was an excerise toward Enlightenment. Instead it is nothing but shadows and heaviness and more loss.

“Erronne”

I look up.

“I realize this has been hard for you. No girl your age could take it in better than you have, but we have a great deal to accomplish and don't laugh, but we don't have a lot of time. We'll stop for now. It's late.”

“What about checking the perimeter?”

“How long have you lived in Terra Heaven, Erronne? How well do you know this land? Have you ever found your way here before? No. That's because it's only visible to you- TicToc. There are rooms off the main corridor where we met. Choose one. Get some rest.”

I turn to leave. Then I realize.

“I don't know your name.”

“My name is Arrick. I am Sitaa Matron's mother. She asked for my help and here I am.”

“Her mother? Yes. Erronne, I am her mother. I am TicToc as I told you. It is late. Good-night.”

“Good-night, Arrick.” My head is reeling. Tomorrow will be splendid.

"TicToc which means time will stop, life will be eternal. Eternal life is passed from mother to daughter. Not all daughters are tethered to eternity but a daughter of a TicToc carries the grain. If a child bears the symbol, her Awakening is destined. When time actually stops varies. No one knows what triggers an Awakening. The symbol means only that it will happen."

  8. Although it is a bit difficult to visualize the Terra Heaven world there is a lot in the story to intrigue the reader and I look forward to the next episode.

    1. Robin, while interesting, the physicality of the place doesn't shape or move the story forward. However, I will weave in elements that give the reader a sense of place. I value your feedback. Thanks for reading.

  10. A lot of unanswered questions here, but I like how at the end, she realizes she was so caught up in the story that she had forgotten to ask her benefactor's name.

  11. I love the tone here -- I'm going to have to go find out more about the order, but it feels like a cross between The ... I'm going to blow the spelling ... Benegesserats in Herbert and the Handmaids in Atwood, with overtones of Katniss Everdeen in the protagonist.

    1. Loved Atwood's work. Don't know the other two. Will look them up. Thanks.
